2 LT Carl S. Goodman

Životopis:

Carl Suther Goodman se narodil rodičům Williamu A. Goodmanovi a Maggie Jewette Suther Goodmanové ve městě Concord, okres Cabarrus, North Carolina, dne 12. ledna 1923 jako sedmé z osmi dětí. Jeho sourozenci byli Opal Hoyte Goodman (1906 – 1970), Frank Buford Goodman (1908 – 1996), Hobart Lee Goodman (1910 – 1986), William Monroe Goodman (1911 – 1984), Johny Nelson Goodman (1913 – 1996), Louise Goodman Carter (1915 – 1990) a Hazeline Goodman Faggart (1925 – 2015).

Na střední škole Mount Pleasant High School  maturoval v 16 letech jako druhý nejlepší maturant své třídy. Ředitel střední školy, kterou Carl navštěvoval, tvrdil, že za celou dobu, po kterou učil, byl Carl byl jeho jediným studentem typicky určeným pro studium na vojenské akademii. Od své sestry Hazeline dostal Carl přezdívku Teedy, ze sourozenců si byli nejbližší a Hazeline smrt svého bratra nesla velmi těžce. Z dopisů, které Carl během své vojenské služby posílal domů, vyplývají jeho výčitky za to, že spolu se svými bratry opustil domov a veškerou práci na farmě museli zastat jejich rodiče. Carl byl silně věřící křesťan, při každé příležitosti chodil do kostela, rád se učil, měl rád práci na farmě a miloval létání.

Do služby u letectva Carl nastoupil na Floridě v roce 1942. Když se během leteckého výcviku Carl dozvěděl o Doolitlově náletu na Tokio, rozhodl se, že se stane pilotem bombardéru. Letecký výcvik absolvoval s celkovou úspěšností 93% (!), která mu v jeho kurzu zajistila místo v TOP 20.  Po úspěšném absolvování výcviku pilota čtyřmotorového bombardéru obdržel hodnost poručíka a byl odeslán na spojeneckou leteckou základnu v Amendole poblíž města Foggia v Itálii, kde byl přidělen k 20. bombardovací peruti 2. bombardovací skupiny 15. armády letectva Spojených států amerických.

Na svou pvní bojovou misi letěl 13. srpna 1944. Jeho šestá mise, na kterou letěl 29. srpna 1944, se mu stala osudnou. Nad Slovenskem byl jeho letoun zasažen palbou německých stíhačů, ve vzduchu explodoval a jeho trosky dopadly u malé vesničky Šanov na moravsko-slovenském pomezí. Při pádu zahynulo devět členů posádky a Carl byl jedním z nich.

V bitvě zahynulo celkem 41 amerických letců a 28 z nich bylo 31. srpna pohřbeno do hromadného hrobu na hřbitově ve Slavičíně. V září roku 1946 byli všichni tito letci exhumováni a koncem stejného měsíce pohřbeni na americkém vojenském hřbitově Lorraine u města St. Avold ve Francii. Ne všichni z těchto letců byli ovšem identifikováni a mezi neidentifikované patřil i Carl. K jeho identifikaci došlo až v říjnu roku 1950, v listopadu téhož roku byla o identifikaci informována rodina, které byla nabídnuta buď repatriace pozůstatků do USA, anebo jejich uložení k poslednímu odpočinku na některém z amerických vojenských hrobů v Evropě. Počátkem prosince roku 1950 otec podepisuje souhlas s uložením ostatků jeho syna v Evropě a v lednu roku 1951 je Carl pohřben s vojenskými poctami na hřbitově Ardennes American cemetery poblíž města Neupré v Belgii. Dle příbuzných, se kterými jsme v kontaktu, se tak Carlův otec rozhodl proto, aby dále nejitřil rány způsobené rodině ztrátou syna a sourozence…

Carl Suther Goodman was born to William A. Goodman a Maggie Jewette Suther Goodman in Concord, Cabarrus county, North Carolina, on January 12, 1923 as a seventh child out of eight. His siblings were Opal Hoyte Goodman (1906 – 1970), Frank Buford Goodman (1908 – 1996), Hobart Lee Goodman (1910 – 1986), William Monroe Goodman (1911 – 1984), Johny Nelson Goodman (1913 – 1996), Louise Goodman Carter (1915 – 1990) and Hazeline Goodman Faggart (1925 – 2015).

He graduated from Mount Pleasant High School at age 16, and was Salutatorian of his class.  Head official at the school he attended said Carl was the only student he had in all the years he taught that military academy material.. Carl’s sister Hazeline gave him a nickname Teedy, she and Carl were very close to each other and Hazeline took extremelly hard when Carl died. In letters Carl sent home during his military service he voiced his concern about leaving his father with the responsibility of running a farm without him and his brothers in the war. Carl was Christian who used to go to church when he could and someone with an excellent work ethic for both his school and farm work and he loved flying.

Carl joined the Air Corps on February 1, 1942 at Miami Beach, Florida and earned his commission through extensive study after enlistment. When Carl heard of the Doolittle raid on Tokyo he decided to become a bomber pilot. He trained at Milliken University, Decatur, Illnois; Merced, California; Santa Ana, California; Douglas Army Air Base, Arizona; Kingman Army Air Base, Kingman, Arizona. He received his wings at Dalhart Army Air Base, Texas, and took advanced training at Gulfport, Mississippi. Savannah, Georgia was his last stop on the way to port of embarkation. He finished the pilot’s training with the succes rate of 93% (!), in TOP 20 in his class.  After completing the four-engine  bomber pilot’s traning he recieved the rank of second lieutenant and was sent to the Allied air force base at Amendola close to the town of Foggia in Italy where he was assigned to the 20th bomb squadron of the 2nd bomb group of the 15th USAAF.

He flew his first combat mission  on August 13, 1944. His sixt mission he flew on August 29, 1944, was his ultimate one. His Fortress was heavy hit by the German fughters over Slovakia, the machine exploded in the air and crashed at the small village of Sanov at the Czech-Slovak border. Nine crew members perished during the crash and Carl was one of them.

41 American fliers were killed in a battle and 28 of them were buried in a mass grave in a cemetery in Slavicin on August 31, 1944. In September 1946 were all these airmen bodies exhumed and buried at Lorraine America cemetery at St. Avold in France. But not all of the bodies were indetified and Carl belonged among those unidentified ones. His body was not identified until October 1950, his family was informed about identification in November of the same year and was given a choice between returning the Carl’s remains to the States or burial in Europe at one of the American war cemeteries. At the beginning of December Carl’s father signs an agreement of burial of his son’s remains in Europe and in January 1951 Carl is laid to his last rest at the Ardennes American Cemetery at Neupré in Belgium.
According to the Carl’s relatives we are in touch with his father decided so to protect the family from extreme grief from loss of their son and sibling…

V roce 2014 jsem měl možnost hřbitov v Neupré a Carlův hrob navštívit. Moc pěkně udržovaný hřbitov a klidné místo… a opět se nešlo neubránit otázce – proč jsou války…?

In 2014 I had a chance to visit the cemetery at Neupré and Carl’s grave. Very well maintained cemetery and quiet place…and again I could resist to ask myself – why there are the wars…?
