Havárie letce z Tuskegee

Poručík Letectva spojených států amerických Albert Louis Young dne 21. ledna letěl se svou jednotkou (100. stíhací peruť, 332. stíhací skupina) jako doprovod 5. bombardovacího křídla USAAF s cílem náletu Vídeň. Z tohoto letu se bohužel nevrátil a kolem 12:30 havaroval se svým letounem Mustang P-51C-10-NT, v.č. 42-103454 mezi obcemi Blučina a Opatovice na Brněnsku a pilot přitom zahynul. Protože k pádu letounu došlo cca 100 km severně od předpokládaného místa operační činnosti, důvod této havárie není úplně jasný. Na základě skutečnosti, že se pilotovo tělo našlo mimo vrak a s neotevřeným padákem, jednou z pravděpodobných příčin by mohla být porucha okruhu dodávky kyslíku a následná ztráta vědomí pilota. Letoun pak mohl postupně klesat a při sestupu do nižší letové hladiny se mohl pilot opět probrat a těsně před dopadem opustit letoun. Protože k tomu ale zřejmě došlo v příliš malé výšce, padák se již nestihl otevřít a pilot nárazem na zem zahynul. Letec snědé pleti s rozbitou hlavou byl nalezen asi kilometr od místa dopadu jeho stroje. Poručík Young byl o den později, 22. ledna 1945, pohřben na hřbitově v Blučině. Dne 17. září 1946 bylo jeho tělo americkými exumačními jednotkami exhumováno a převezeno na hřbitov amerických vojáků Lorraine American Cemetery poblíž města St. Avold ve Francii, kde Albert L. Young spočívá dodnes. Počátkem devadesátých let byla tomuto pilotovi v Blučině odhalena pamětní deska, nedopatřením ovšem se špatně uvedeným počátečním písmenem jeho prostředního jména a s příjmením, ve kterém chybělo písmeno “u”.

Životopis:

Albert L. Young se narodil 13. října 1921 ve městě Memphis, státě Tennesse. Žil se svou matkou Hazeline na adrese 500 South Wellington Street, Mephis, Tennessee. O jeho případných sourozencích doposud není nic známo. Po absolvování střední školy pracoval v memphiském hotelu Peabody jako číšník. Vstoupil do armády, prodělal pilotní výcvik na známé letecké základně v Tuskegee ve státě Alabama, který úspěšně ukončil v rámci své třídy 44-C-SE dne 12.3.1944. Od května do června 1944 sloužil u 324. stíhací skupiny se základnou Pignataro v Itálii a od července 1944, kdy došlo spojením 99., 100., 301. a 302. perutě k vytvoření 332. stíhací skupiny, byl převelen do této jednotky, konkrétně 100. stíhací perutě dislokované v Ramitelli v jižní Itálii. 332. stíhací skupina, jejíž letecký i pozemní personál byl tvořen vojáky snědé pleti, je známa pod označením “Letci z Tuskegee“.

Odhalení nového památníku

Dne 21.1.2018, tedy na den přesně 73 let poté, kdy u obce Blučina vyhasl Albertův mladý život, byla na náměstí Svobody v Blučině odhalena nová pamětní deska, která má následujícím generacím navždy připomínat oběti vojáků, kteří neváhali nasadit a dokonce i položit svůj život za mír v tomto světě. Slavnostního aktu se zúčastnili členové zastupitelstva obce, za americkou ambasádu v Praze vojenský přidělenec plukovník Mark Wootan, vojenský kaplan armády ČR, jednotka sboru dobrovolných hasičů, jednotka čestné stráže, klub kamarádů historických vozidel se svými vozidly Jeep Willys, zástupci Zemského Muzea v Brně a s organizací průběhu vzpomínkové akce vypomohl spolek Letecká bitva Bílé Karpaty. Akce se zúčastnilo velké množství lidí, jak místních, tak i ze vzdálenějších destinací a měla, i díky počasí, velmi zdařilý průběh.
Odhalení památníku vzbudilo velký zájem i v zahraničí, a to konkrétně u asociace “Letců z Tuskegee”. S velkým uznáním sledovali úctu, kterou místní chovají k padlým, kteří se podíleli na osvobození jejich vlasti, přípravu a organizaci vzpomínkové akce a projevili velký zájem o fota a videozáznam z akce. Dokonce nám poslali i dvě poselství, viz níže:

Historikové a občané České republiky, na počest poručíka Alberta L. Younga, letce z Tuskegee, bych chtěla ráda osobně poděkovat za jeho statečnost a boj za naši zemi během 2. světové války. Jsem ráda, že Česká republika poručíka Alberta L. Younga uznává tímto způsobem. Bude se na něj vždy vzpomínat. Děkuji České republice za tento způsob vyjádření cti někomu, kdo si to zasloužil. Toto pomáhá dát tvář vojákům, kteří zemřeli za naši svobodu a spravedlnost.

Historikové a občané České republiky, memphiská komora Letců z Tuskegee se sídlem v Memphisu, Tennessee by ráda vyjádřila naši úpřímnou vděčnost za uspořádání vzpomínkové akce dne 21. ledna 2018 na náměstí Svobody v Blučině v souvislosti s odhalením nové pamětní desky věnované rodákovi z Memphisu v Tennessee, poručíku Albertu Youngovi, letci z Tuskegee. Je nám úpřímně líto ztráty poručíka Younga, ale jsme hrdi, že jeho ztráta života, kdy tragicky havaroval poblíž Blučiny dne 21. ledna 1945, prokázala statečnost, odhodlání a ochotu tohoto letce Leteckých sil Spojených států amerických létat kamkoli, kde bylo potřeba bránit svobodu a spravedlnost světa během 2. světové války. Jsme hrdi na poručíka Younga a jsme vděčni za to, že jej tímto způsobem navždy uznáváte a uctíváte.

Tuskegee airman’s crash

United States Air Force Second Lieutenant Albert Louis Young flew on Jan. 21, 1945 with his unit (100 FS, 332 BG) an escort mission with the heavy bombers of the 5 BW to Vienna. Unfortunately he never came back from this mission and about 00:30 pm he crashed with his Mustang P-51C-10-NT, S/N 42-103454 between the villages Blucina and Opatovice in Brno region and the pilot lost his life. Because the crash site of his machine was about 65 miles away from the expected area of the operations the reason of this accident is still unclear. Because of the fact that the pilot’s body was found out of the wreckage with an unopened parachute , one of the reasons of this unfortunate event could have been a malfunction of the oxygen supply system followed by the loss of consciousness of the pilot. The plane could then gradually descend, and when descending to the lower flight level, the pilot could wake up and bail out just before the impact. But because of the low altitude his parachute didn´t deploy and the pilot was killed by the hard hit. The black skin pilot with broken head was found on the field aproximately 1000 yards away from his machine crash site. One day later, on Jan. 22, 1945, 2/Lt Albert L. Young was buried at the local cemetery in Blucina. On Sept. 17, 1946 his body was exhumed by the American exhumation units and transferred to the Lorraine American Cemetery close to St. Avold, France, where Albert rests till today. In memory of Albert L. Young in early 90’s there was unveiled a stone monument in Blucina, but by a mistake with the wrong first letter in his middle name and missing “u” in his surname.

Bio:

Albert L. Young was born on October 13, 1921 in Memphis, Tennesse. He lived with his mother Hazeline at the address 500 S. Wellington Street, Mephis, Tennessee. There is nothing known about his possible siblings so far. After graduation at the high school he worked at Peabody hotel at Mephis as a waiter. He enlisted in 1943, was trained at the known airbase in Tuskegee in Alabama and completed the training, as a member of the class 44-C-SE on March 12, 1944. From May to June 1944 he served at the 324 FG based in Pignataro, Italy and from July 1944, when 99 FS, 100 FS, 301 FS and 302 FS formed a new 332 FG, he was assigned to this unit, specifically to its 100 FS based in Ramitelli, Italy. This unit whose both flying and ground personel was created by the afro-american soldiers, is known as “Tuskegee Airmen“.

New memorial unveiling

On January 21, 2018, exactly 73 years after Albert lost his young life at Blucina, there was an commemorative unveiling of the new plague in his memory. This palgue will always and forever remind to the new generations the sacrifice of the soldiers who didn’ t hesitate to put and even lose their own life fot the peace in this world. The commemoration was attended by the members of the council, U.S. Embassy’s Defense Attaché Officer Col. Mark Wootan , Czech army military chaplain, firemen unit, a honor guard unit, military veteran car club guys with their Jeeps Willys, members of the Brno museum and the Air Battle Over White Carpathians assn. members helped with the event organization. Many people attended the ceremony and not only local, but also from the farther distances. The commemoŕation was very nice, also thanks to the nice weather for this period of the year.
The memorial unveiling had also great interest in the United states, specifically at the Tuskegee Airmen Inc. With great recognition, they watched the respect that local people behave to the fallen who contributed to the liberation of their country, the preparation and organization of a commemoration, and showed great interest in the photo and video taken during the event. They even sent us two messages that were read during the commemoration, see below:

Historians and Citizens in the Czech Republic, I would like to personally give thanks to the honor of Tuskegee Airman 2nd Lt. Albert Young for his bravery and fighting for our country during WWII. I am glad that the Czech Republic is recognizing Lt. Albert Young in this manner. He will forever be remembered. I thank the Czech Republic for bestowing this type of honor for a deserving candidate. This helps put a face on the soldiers who died for freedom and justice.

Young but we are proud that his lost of life, as he tragically crashed near the village of Blucina on January 21, 1945 occurred as he demonstrated bravery, dedication, and a willingness to fly wherever needed to defend Freedom and Justice in the World as a pilot in the US Army Air Corps operations during World War II. We are proud of Lt Young and are tremendously grateful that you are forever recognizing and honoring him in this manner.
